cuba junior mel aluminium marcus gooding goding Gooding is an artist based in london and was born and brought up in England and studied at St. Martin’s School of Art and University College, London. She works principally in oil or acrylic on panels on a scale up to six feet. She creates striking images, sometimes abstract, sometimes figurative, sometimes combining both, often based on flora and fauna. She captures the essence of a creature, time or place, distilling its nature to make it seem new and fresh, yet familiar.
Gooding has developed a very bold and personal sense of colour, influenced by her extensive travels in Africa. Strong vibrant colours are often contrasted on startling white backgrounds giving the images a sculptural three-dimensional effect. Although Gooding regularly uses botanical and animal images there is a subtle human feel about her paintings as well as vital movement.
In her smaller works, collages and mosaics, Gooding intricately weaves together shapes, colours and ideas. She invents a stylised, self-conscious language to dramatise cultural codes and human tensions. As in her paintings the colours are rich, contrasting and sensual.
Gooding’s work is generally exhibited on an annual basis mostly in London. Her paintings are in collections around the world from Hong Kong to Denmark via New York and Antigua. Her artwork has been used as a book cover for a recent volume of poetry, ‘Entering Sleep Mode’, published by Shoestring Press. Gooding is currently working on a number of commissions. | |
